As you know childhood obesity is at an alarming rate. I am very passionate about health and children and this is one of the reasons why I wrote my book Vernon the Vegetable Man. I hope it will encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle. I feel to change a generation we must start with the youth.
There are many organizations and advocates that are doing their part to help our children get healthy. There is a wonderful organization called Moms Rising. They create awareness around critical issues regarding women, families, and mothers. This organization is partnering with award winning filmmaker Byron Hurt of Soul Food Junkies to challenge childhood obesity in the African American community and they are stopping in Detroit for a screening.
This event will be fun and informative. There will be a Q and A with Byron Hurt led by Dream Hampton. Attendees can look forward to a panel discussion with activists and experts including Monifah Bandele, Kathryn Lynch Underwood, Kadiri Sennefer, Myrtle Denice Thomas, Tepfirah Rushdan, and Lottie Spady. Food is also included, there will be healthy food demonstrations by the amazing Nezaa Bandele. If you haven’t tried her food you are missing out!
