This week is Brain Awareness Week. We are here to help you keep your memory on point for longevity. As I get older I find with all of the wonderful information overload of technology and social media that my short-term memory is lagging behind a bit. I have learned to turn it off and go back to basics. I take time to turn off all electronics and yes my phone (sometimes feels like an addict going through withdrawal) so I can clear my mind from the “noise” if you would. There are many things we can incorporate into our diet and lifestyle to increase our memory. Check out some foods and activities that will keep your memory in motion.
Munch for Memory – The following foods will keep your brain in top shape.
Vitamins B6 and B12 – The B vitamins play an important role in brain function such as brain power and memory function. If you have a deficiency in these vitamins, it can lead to a decrease in overall brain function.
Try: Walnuts, sunflower seeds, collard greens, avocado, and brown rice
Antioxidants -When free radicals enter the bloodstream they will also break down the brain cells. This is very common within the elder population. Foods that are high in antioxidants will fight off the free radicals and protect your body and brain.
Try: Berries, green and white tea, garlic, tomatoes, spinach and sweet potatoes. If you like to include herbs in your food try cinnamon, cloves, dried oregano leaf and turmeric powder.
Fiber–Fiber is known to slow down sugar absorption to the brain. There are many foods that have fiber that are also known to help healthy brain function.
Try: Flaxseed, barley, broccoli, black-eyed peas, raisins, and prunes.
Mind Games – Nope it is not what you think. With these games you will be able to spot the “mind games” we all loathe from a mile away. You are never too old to play games that will help you boost your brain power. Have fun!
Lumosity – This site claims to offer brain training exercises that work. They remind users, regardless of your age, Lumosity can make you smarter and more mentally fit.
Real Age – This site has wonderful articles about health and wellness. There is also a section with brain games.
