Kim Coles Celebrates Her Natural G.I.F.T.S

Posted on August 12, 2011 by in Inspiration

Most of us remember her as the bright eyed humorous friend with a childlike optimism. The show was Living Single, a sitcom about six friends sharing personal and professional experiences in Brooklyn. There was something about Synclaire James-Jones. She gave everyone that breath of fresh air when it came to putting things into perspective. This character was played by Kim Coles. She attained her natural gift of humor from the womb and she always knew she wanted to make people laugh.

“I grew up watching Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball, they were so funny. I knew that I wanted to be a funny and glamorous lady,” she says. As Coles planted the seed, she started her career in plus size modeling. Knowing she had humor in her heart, Coles decided to try stand-up comedy and the result was successful. “When I tried stand up it worked. At this time female comics were far and few between. My stand-up led me to show business.”

The steps into show business “was easier than maintaining a career in entertainment,” explains Coles. With sitcoms being popular in the 90’s Coles realized that “Living Single, was the sparkling jewel of her career.” As the interest in television programming started to change, Coles had to realign her vision.  “I had to ask myself where do I fit in and I really had to find my own place,” she explains. Jumping on the reality TV bandwagon, she was on VH1’s Celebrity fit club. “I lost 24lbs in 12 weeks, after the show I gained the weight back and went through a seven month depression.  I knew it was time to get focused.”

It was the journey during the “valley” that forced Coles to ask the right questions. “I used this time to get quiet and figure out what I need to do and who I need to be.” Coles realized that this time of depression was a blessing in disguise. “I was given a renewed vision and vigor. This was a beginning of a plan to be focused and I realized that all that matters is finding your passion, core values and spirituality.” Through asking questions she was led to create her program Open the G.I.F.T.S. “I asked what can I do to be of service, I was thinking someone is hurting and I want to help them. I knew if I am asking these questions, I know someone else is too.” With this spiritual confirmation Open the G.I.F.T.S  was born.

The G.I.F.T.S (Gratitude/ Intention/ Forgiveness/Triumphs/ Self-Love) Program is a lifestyle journey where Coles uses comedy and inspiration to help others identify and express their gifts with the world. She encourages others to live life out loud and create joy and fulfillment in life.  Coles feels blessed to be aligned with her purpose and helping others do the same, “when it comes to following your dreams, just do it to the beat of your own heart. Do that which makes your heart sing,” she emphasizes.
